The Cheque Is In The Mail

In the fall of 2000, Bill Anelli and Kathryn Weinstein were struck by how underutilized checks were as a serious mode of communication–sure, you could get checks with bunnies, kittens, prayers from Jesus, or even motorcycles on them, but none of these things spoke directly to the process at hand–signing away huge chunks of hard-earned money.

With this in mind, they conceived of The Cheque Republic as a business to produce and distribute checks for the hip, alternative market–folks who wanted to make a commentary on this most painful of chores–parting with their money. Their online company has grown strictly through word of mouth, and has been written about in publications as varied as The Utne Reader and Tulsa Today.

According to The Cheque Republic philosophy, the checks "offer ironic commentaries on the use of money via the medium of money," and accordingly, feature a total of twenty designs with messages such as "Wage Slave" and "Pound O’ My Flesh."
